Robotic telepresence, also known as telerobotics is a subfield of telepresence whose aim is to increase presence via embodiment in a robotic platform. In particular, robotic telepresence can be an effective tool to enhance social interaction suited to certain groups of users such as the elderly. Following the success of the first edition of the workshop held in Lausanne, Switzerland in conjunction with HRI'11 , we organize the workshop second edition in association with IEEE Ro-Man 2012 in Paris, with the aim to continue the discussion on various aspects important for social robotic telepresence. This workshop covers all aspects of social robotic telepresence and applications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • the mechanical design,
  • the user interface design,
  • the interaction between the pilot user and the local user
  • the perception of mobile robotic telepresence systems,
  • the experimental evaluation of social robotic telepresence including multiple types of users of robotic telepresence,
  • longitudinal evaluations of telepresence systems and
  • general ethical implications of telepresence
  • the added value of spatial presence in the context of social telepresence
  • comparisons between robotic and non-robotic systems are of interest.

We welcome contributions concerning results reached from the above-mentioned areas of interest, user evaluation and methodologies, as well as reports from the deployment of social robotic solutions into real world contexts.

Live Demonstrations

We also welcome proposals for a live demo of telepresence robotic solutions. Interested parties in performing a demo are requested to write an email to the contact organiser. During the workshop a special session will be set aside for such demos to occur.

Authors Instructions

We solicit both submissions of research papers reporting significant research results and position papers. Full papers should be maximum 8 pages including figures, while position papers should be a maximum of 2 pages, both following Ro-Man 2012 paper format instructions. Prospective authors should submit their papers electronically in PDF format, via the EasyChair site:

Papers will be peer reviewed and the decision of acceptance will be mailed to the corresponding author. At least one of the authors is expected to register and attend the workshop.
