Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss my recent research (in collaboration with others) in bringing about the practical implementation of a heterogeneous team of 100+ physical robots. The application to which this robot team will be applied is an indoor exploration task which requires continuous team activity -- with minimal human intervention -- over a 24 hour period. The robots on this team are heterogeneous in that they have significantly different sensing capabilities, as required by different parts of the mission. The team is heterogeneous by design, because the use of a homogeneous team of robots with all the required sensing capabilities would be prohibitively expensive (on the order of several million USD). Thus the sensing capabilities are distributed across the robots, with the result that no individual robot on this team would be able to accomplish the entire mission, even if it were duplicated 100 times. The result is the expected ability to accomplish the task with an order of magnitude reduced cost, but with a more extensive requirement for heterogeneous cooperation. I will discuss the challenges of implementing large heterogeneous team solutions that enable robots to assist each other by using different sensing modalities, as well as our planned solutions. This talk addresses work in progress and will describe work accomplished to date on this project.

Abstract: The sixth RoboCup (Robot World Cup Competition and Conference) was held in June, 2002 in conjunction with real World Cup in Fukuoka, Japan. About 200 teams, 1000 members from 30 nations around world attended and 120,000 people visited the site for four days. It was so exciting and successful. The first humanoid league was held with 13 teams from 6 nations, and house-designed humanoids participated in a number of challenges: stand on one leg, walking, PK, and free style. The many video clips will be shown and the future issues will be discussed.
